Turkey has proposed to host a joint contingent in Syria

Ankara is now prioritizing the implementation of decisions made in recent meetings between the US and Turkey, after heavy diplomatic traffic to address disagreements between the two sides over Syria, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said. During Tillerson's visit the two allies agreed to form a new "mechanism" to coordinate actions in Syria more closely going forward.

"It is out of question for Turkey to use an internationally prohibited war tool in Afrin", Yasin Aktay, a chief adviser to the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, told Al Jazeera over the phone on Sunday.

Turkey claims the YPG is linked to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which has been fighting a rebellion against the Turkish state since 1984.

The situation has triggered concern in Washington that the Erdogan government may be shifting increasingly toward an alignment with Russian Federation.

The Syrian government reportedly rejected a request by the Kurdish self-government in Afrin to deploy troops to the area against an ongoing Turkish military operation, after the Kurds refused to lay down their weapons. "We're not going to be the USA doing one thing, and Turkey doing another".

Cavusoglu said "some of the promises" the United States made "were not kept", alluding to Turkey's demand that the US-backed YPG leave the Syrian town of Manbij and move east of Euphrates River.

"They tell us, 'Don't come to Manbij.' We will come to Manbij to hand over these territories to their rightful owners", Erdogan said in February.
