HIV Positive Cases Detected at Single Health Camp in UP's Unnao

Investigations into a sudden surge in Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infected patients in India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh revealed that the patients were administered injections using a single infected syringe, officials said Tuesday. Upon investigation, the committee came to know that all the reported cases of HIV had a common thread.

A team visited Premganj and Chakmirpur areas of Bangarmau and filed a report, based on which screening camps were held at three places on January 24, 25 and 27. Talking to a news agency, Sunil, Bangarmau Councillor said, "40 positive cases have been found". Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh health minister said that the matter is now being investigated.

"All the victims have been admitted in Kanpur medical college hospital for treatment", Singh said.

"The patients had informed health officials that they developed the condition after being injected by the quack, who used a single syringe to inject all his patients", the letter, a copy of which is with the Hindustan Times, said.

The suspect, Rajendra Kumar, is alleged to have used the same syringes as those he had previously used to treat flu, fever and body ache. Of those, 9,100 were children under the age of 15.

According to 2017 UNAIDS data, India has 2.1 million people living with HIV, which is about 0.26% of its population.
