'NK uses Berlin embassy to get missile parts'

The agency believes the tech was used for Pyongyang's missile and nuclear programs.

North Korea obtained materials for its arsenal of ballistic missiles through its embassy in Berlin, Germany's top intelligence chief has revealed.

Massen said that German authorities suspect portions of Pyongyang's weapons program were "acquired through shadow buyers or shadow markets overseas, which they then bought in Germany".

Earlier in the day in his talks with Kono, Wang urged joint efforts with Japan to get bilateral ties back on track. Kono met with Foreign Minister Wang Yi , Premier Li Keqiang, and State Councillor Yang Jiechi.

In a programme to be aired on NDR television today, BfV head Hans-Georg Maassen said: "We determined that procurement activities have been carried out from there that are, in our view, done with a view to the missile programme and sometimes also for the nuclear programme".

"When we detect something of this sort, we prevent it", he said.

An investigation by the German broadcaster NDV found that the intelligence services found evidence of procurements as recently as 2017, according to a press release. These items were allegedly used for the country's missile program.

Maassen's comments come as the United Nations revealed North Korea earned nearly $200 million from exporting banned commodities a year ago, in violation of worldwide sanctions.

North Korea has repeatedly been accused of flouting global sanctions created to make supreme leader Kim Jong-un abandon his nuclear programme.
