Japan And China Agree To Resume Leaders' Visits As Ties Thaw

Earlier in the day in his talks with Kono, Wang urged joint efforts with Japan to get bilateral ties back on track.

Kono met with Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Premier Li Keqiang, and State Councillor Yang Jiechi.

His was the first visit to Beijing by a Japanese foreign minister in about two years.

One of the most recent official visits made by a top Japanese diplomat to China was that of then-foreign minister Fumio Kishida in 2016.

The Chinese minister also called for Japan "not to slack or fall back, and work together with China to meet each other halfway".

Melania skips Davos and heads to Florida

"I believe it is important not only to discuss issues related to our two countries, but for Japan and China to stand side by side to deal with global issues", he said.

The visit by Japan's foreign minister to Beijing over the weekend marks the first tangible sign of progress in Sino-Japanese relations since both countries indicated previous year an interest in ending the state of virtual hostility that has persisted since 2012, when China halted normal relations in the wake of Japan's nationalization of islands disputed by the two countries.

The three countries have been rotating summit-hosting duties since 2008, but the meetings were not held in 2013 and 2014 after a chill in Japan-China relations over the Senkaku/Diaoyu islands dispute. The latter welcomes this, pointing out the warming the relationship between the two countries.

"What Japan does will not change one bit the fact that the Diaoyu Islands belong to China".

"We have seen some positive momentum but bilateral relations still face challenges", Hua said.

China also views North Korea's nuclear weapons program as a "big" risk and has chose to improve relations with neighbors Japan and South Korea to "concentrate their diplomatic efforts" on Pyongyang, Nagy added. The Japanese government firmly protested to China over the event. China then would be able to adopt the same tone about Japan that it does about Taiwan and Tibet, claiming that all these territories were part of China since ancient times - but a trifle hard to explain, perhaps, for a country that insists that war is not in its DNA.

"Japan is deeply concerned when there are incidents like a Chinese nuclear submarine visiting the disputed Senkaku Islands. and nearby waters, and the two countries will need more dialogue and consultation if they are to resolve this matter", he said.

Spokesperson Hua Chunying was responding to media reports that the Japanese government had opened an exhibition in Tokyo on Thursday to showcase Japan's claim for the islands, Xinhua news agency reported.

"Japan and China do not necessarily share views" on Beijing's strategy, the official said, adding, "We should consider carefully whether and how Japan will cooperate".
