Pro-Russia Zeman wins Czech Republic election

Earlier on Saturday, Zeman had been reelected Czech president in the run-off election.

Pro-European Union academic Jiri Drahos is trying to unseat anti-immigration political veteran Milos Zeman, who has sought closer relations with Russian Federation and China, in a tight run-off in the Czech presidential election that started on Friday. The 73-year-old defeated pro-European Union contender Jiri Drahos proving popularity of his tough stance against immigration.

Zeman has taken a tough stance on immigration and was one of the few European politicians to back Donald Trump in the 2016 USA presidential election.

Zeman, 73, is largely being judged on his past five years which have included moves to boost relations with Russian Federation and China as well as his overt involvement in the Czech political scene and frequent blunt, outspoken, and vulgar comments.

The Czech Republic boasts one of the EU's fastest growing economies, its lowest unemployment and the highest living standards among the bloc's post-communist members. He was seen as a political novice who was more oriented towards the West than Zeman.

Right, listen up dog owners - no matter how cute you think it would be DO NOT dye your dog purple, or any colour for that matter. She was placed on fluids, medication and the animal rescue team washed off as much of the chemicals as they could.

The election mirrors the divisions between more socially liberal and conservative camps that have featured in votes around Europe and in the United States.

Drahos, 68, conceded defeat and congratulated Zeman on Saturday afternoon.

Political analyst Tomas Lebeda dubbed the election a "showdown between two completely different candidates representing two parts of a rather split society".

The Czech constitution gives presidents limited executive powers, but President Zeman has not hesitated to test the boundaries.

Since then, Zeman a diabetic, who walks with a cane and is known to be a heavy drinker and smoker, divided the nation with his pro-Russia stance, support for closer ties with China, and strong anti-migrant and anti-Muslim rhetoric.

He has benefited from rising Czech hostility to immigration, especially from Muslim countries, although the country received just 116 asylum applications between January and November past year.

Drahos is a soft-spoken chemistry professor who promised a stronger voice in the European Union, reversing the country's aloofness that has put it closer to Poland and Hungary - two states often at loggerheads with the bloc's executive.

Prime Minister Andrej Babis, a billionaire businessman who has ruled as a caretaker since his minority cabinet lost a confidence vote in parliament last week, backed Mr Zeman.

Mr Zeman's current presidency does not end until March, so he plans to reappoint Mr Babis next month. Zeman is brash, with a self-advertised appetite for alcohol and tobacco.

His failed attempt to replace Havel as president in 2003 - in a vote won by Klaus - led him to reconsider his priorities and retreat to a country house far from Prague "to embrace trees", as he once said.
