Pence vows: Next year in Jerusalem!

"Your cause is our cause and your fight is our fight".

On the first day of his visit Monday, Pence told Israeli lawmakers the United States would open its embassy in Jerusalem in 2019 - becoming the first foreign nation to open an embassy in the city in nearly four decades.

The answer to this question lies in the religious motivations of President Trump's Evangelical electorate, whose convictions Vice President Mike Pence shares, to the extent, it is said, that he played a dominant influence on the USA decision. In it Pence announced that the United States embassy in Israel would be moved from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem - whose staus is at the heart of any resolution to the conflict - by the end of next year.

Palestine's envoy to the United States has revealed a "blossoming friendship" between officials of the two countries, until President Donald Trump broke with worldwide consensus and formally recognised Jerusalem as Israel's capital in December.

Mohammad Sammak, co-chair of Lebanon's National Committee for Christian-Muslim Dialogue, goes so far as to say that the decision to transfer the USA embassy to Jerusalem could be the prelude to recognition of Israel's sovereignty over Occupied Jerusalem.

Netanyahu to meet Putin
The prime minister will depart for Russian Federation next Monday and return to Israel a few hours after meeting with Putin.

Those who would have objected to Pence's very Zionist speech were no longer in the hall - members of the mostly Arab Joint List Party had been ejected after raising signs declaring Jerusalem to be the capital of Palestine.

The rise in militancy was believed to be tied to Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital on December 6. NPR's Tamara Keith is traveling with Pence, and she's with us now.

And while Pence was in the region making promises of more rigorous United States support to Israel, Abbas was in Brussels, the headquarters of the EU, to appeal for strong European backing for a fair settlement of the Palestinian cause, rather than the one offered by Washington. They see an American vice president whose trip not only demonstrated support for Israel, but also demonstrated just what a mess his administration has made of the peace process in one short year, as evidenced by Palestinian officials refusing to meet with Pence and this deeply and genuinely religious man being told that he is not welcome in Jesus's birthplace.

He said the move blundered burgeoning peace efforts and shattered Palestinian officials' trust in the United States administration.

"We did not understand where the delay was coming from". But there is no peace process right now as we speak.

Lindsey Graham: Immigration Deals Undercut by Stephen Miller
High school classmates of Miller's in California claimed he spoke disparagingly toward Spanish-speaking students. The White House had indicated that it would not re-open negotiations on immigration until the shutdown ended.

The US president did not even stop there when he also expressed the view that US economic aid to the Palestinians would be suspended as long as the they shun peace talks with Israel.

Jonathan Sacks said his advice to Mike Pence was only on historical connections between Jews and Israel.

Pence said he was grateful to be representing Trump and that his decision to designate Jerusalem as the Israeli capital would "create an opportunity to move on in good faith negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority".

MCEVERS: OK, so we hear some applause there, but how was this received? Obviously, no Palestinian leader could sign to this. "Peace can only come through dialogue", he said.

"If it's a blame game, bring it on", the diplomat said. But in Jerusalem - there in the Israeli legislature, Pence got an extended standing ovation.

USA government shuts down! Congress fails to pass spending bill
The problem? That bill doesn't address a solution to protect undocumented immigrants who were brought here illegally as kids. Trump canceled the DACA program in September and gave Congress until March 5 to come up with a legislative replacement.

According to one of these sources, there might be new frameworks for this security cooperation laid out in the near future.
