A New Blood Test May Help Early Detection of 8 Cancers

In blood samples from 1,005 patients with eight types of tumours that had evidently not yet metastasised, the test detected between 33% and 98% of cases, depending on the tumour type.

Therefore, the discovery of a test that can identify eight types of cancer early enough to be successfully treated is an important breakthrough, which could help save many lives. "The use of a combination of selected biomarkers for early detection has the potential to change the way we screen for cancer, and it is based on the same rationale for using combinations of drugs to treat cancers" said Professor Nickolas Papadopoulos, professor of oncology and pathology at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, and one of the researchers of the study.

The findings were published online by Science on January 18, 2018. The test checks the status of eight proteins along with the 16 genes in detecting cancer. The CancerSEEK test is an excellent finding as if we get to know about the occurrence of cancer at the very initial stage then we may get rid of this deadly disease easily. The said project was developed by a medical team at John Hopkins University in the United States. A first test of 812 healthy individuals shows that CancerSEEK shows false positive results (shows cancer without actually being present) in less than 1% of cases. For five of these cancers (ovarian, liver, stomach, pancreas and esophagus) there are no early diagnosis tests to date.

Most types of cancer are easily treated if detected at an early stage, but since their symptoms occur late, they are not spotted in time.

China accuses USA of violating maritime border in South China sea incident
Global law, under normal circumstances, gives countries sovereignty over waters 12 nautical miles from their coastlines. Aside from the Philippines and China, other claimants in the disputed waters are Brunei, Malaysia, Vietnam and Taiwan.

To zero in on the analytes they included in their CancerSEEK test, the research team pulled data from more than three decades of cancer genetics research generated at their Ludwig Center at Johns Hopkins, where the first genetic blueprints for cancer were created, as well as data from many other institutions.

One of the researchers of this revolutionary cancer detection method, Prof. "So the test will still miss a large proportion of cancers at the stage where we want to diagnose them", he said. The result was a relatively small panel of highly selective DNA markers.

CancerSEEK is noninvasive and can, in principle, be administered by primary care providers at the time of other routine blood work.

Jack Wilshere must meet Arsene Wenger's two demands to stay at Arsenal
There are no such plans to allow Ozil to leave, however, despite the similar risk of losing the player on a free transfer. Wenger added that Ozil "should be back" from a knee injury for Saturday's Premier League visit of Crystal Palace .

An global team coordinated by the Johns Hopkins University came up with the idea of simultaneously using two known methods of detecting forms of cancer in an early stage.

Researchers tested 620 people getting colonoscopies or with confirmed colon cancer at a hospital in Taiwan.

Researchers say the test could cost around $500 based on current materials and methods, but the ultimate goal is to commercialize it, so what a company would charge is unknown.
